Sunday, November 6, 2011 Hickstead collapsed and died suddenly after completing a 13 fence course at the Rolex FEI World Cup in Verona, Italy. Canada lost one the most successful international show jumping horses in it's history and the world's current No. 1 rider, Eric Lamaze, lost his legendary partner who took Canada to the Olympic Games in 2008.

Hickstead and Eric won gold at the Hong Kong Olympic Games, having only one rail down in seven rounds of jumping and led Canada to a sliver finish in the team jumping. He has won countless Grand Prix events worldwide and was expected to defend his individual title at the 2012 Summer Games in London. His most recent win was in September at the $1-million International Grand Prix at Calgary's Spruce Meadows, which is the same competition he won in 2007.

Hickstead was known as a small stallion with a huge heart. He was born in 1996 and bred in the Netherlands by B. VAN Schijndel. He stood 16.1˝ hh (1.65 m) and was purchased in 2004 by Eric Lamaze from Schomberg, Ontario. Hickstead's pedigree boasted such influential bloodlines as Nimmerdor, Notaris, Ulft, Le Mexico and Joost. His jumping success was a combination of scope, power, technique, intelligence, temperament and his legendary partnership with Eric.
